NATURAL HISTORY
Picea rubens
The red spruce grows across Northeastern North America throughout Canada, New England, and as far south as Virginia at higher elevations. Red spruces are tolerant of shade and thin soil. They provide food to numerous wildlife species such as red squirrels and spruce grouse. The trees are harvested for lumber but also for use in musical instruments because of their resonant wood.
METAPHOR
The feeling of quiet in a stand of evergreen trees.
