About the Artist

Mommy Monsters Opening Reception Friday February 17 5:30-8:30 PM a solo exhibit with Margaux McAllister

Margaux McAllister, a multidisciplinary artist, aims to explore the idea that our identities can be defined and challenged by our emotions. Her exploration of her identity as a mother plays a crucial role in her work, as she sees it as a psychological and emotional journey. In 2004, she received her BFA from Moore College of Art and Design, and in 2010 received her MFA from San Francisco Art Institute. She currently works and lives in Phoenixville, PA, and has had the opportunity to show her work nationally and internationally. Visit Margaux’s website to discover some of the art she has created here!

About the Exhibit

Margaux McAllister’s Mommy Monsters exhibit consists of giclee prints and tufted masks. These masks are inspired by the emotional states she experiences as an artist and mother, and they also explore how our emotional states can challenge and define our identities. Her Mommy Monsters idea came from the issues she discovered when attempting to regulate her emotions when dealing with her children. As she creates these masks, she reflects and sees how her role as a mother is cast into her art. The inherent dichotomies in masks allow the wearer to simultaneously hide and expose parts of themselves. Using the method of rug tufting, Margaux can subvert the domestic qualities of that medium. Her interest in creating identities based on emotions grew, so she started to relate the masks to her garden. Margaux began to imagine these masks as a representation of the care and the love that go into gardening. She started incorporating plants and flowers into the photographs to extend the gesture of each emotion and deepen the understanding of the whole being. Margaux sees the melancholy, the pose, and the commitment to understanding herself as a mother in these works.
