This Cast Whelk Top Necklace is made from the molding and casting of a real found Channeled Whelk Snail shell. I collected the original broken mollusk shell on a beach in Cape May, New Jersey and then sent it to a local, family owned casting company to be cast in multiples of solid metal. Once the casting is returned, I solder on a jump ring and bail. Finally the pendant is hand polished with care and then strung on a sterling silver cable chain length of your choice. The charm is 1.25" long including bail and 3/4" wide.
The Channeled Whelk is a very large predatory sea snail that can be found in the temperate or cooler waters of the Atlantic. Its' diet consists mainly of clams and while these creatures can sometimes produce a shell that is a foot long, a blue crab is its main predator.
