About the Exhibit:

On the surface, my work celebrates a collection of hands.

Yet underneath the layers of paint and soft pastel hold the history of memory and emotion.

Slowly, and then suddenly, my body and mind started to turn on me.

I experienced unexplained health symptoms that left me navigating a path of uncertainty, pain,  and loneliness. Twenty years and multiple autoimmune diagnoses later, I’m humbled to find  incredible resilience, strength, and possibilities.

Healing Hands investigates a complex mix of what we can all experience. If my art could speak, it would offer a comforting truth: You are not alone.

We carry so much that others can’t see.

We can’t always choose the burden, but we can choose how to hold it.

Artist Biography: Emily Knabb

The creative arts are a constant thread in my life.

At an early age, art and dance comforted me when I looked for alternative solutions to ease symptoms from multiple autoimmune diseases. I received degrees in Art Education and Dance Kinesthesiology from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania to pursue a career in sharing the  healing power of art and movement with others.

I later attended Moore College of Art and Design to pursue a master’s degree that explored  deeper connections between art and specialized populations facing trauma, healing, recovery,  and transformation. I have found that creating an artistic gathering space, a communal outlet  for self-discovery, restores balance and harmony to the body, mind, and spirit.

I embarked on a second master’s degree from Neumann University, focusing on how the arts enhance social and emotional learning skills that are critical to human development and well being. The creative arts are a welcome comfort when negative influences of illness, loss, or  life’s changes encompass life. I have found, oftentimes, that healing can be accomplished  without a cure.

I live in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania where I primarily work in watercolor and pastel illustrating  hands overcoming struggle and finding hope. My art narrates a connection to nature and  relationships while navigating life with chronic pain. My work reminds me that to be human is  to be imperfect and I’m not alone in my struggles.

When not in the studio, I teach high school art classes and spend time supporting local farmers,  cooking nutrient-dense culinary dishes, and practicing hot yoga.

Opening night celebrations begin at 5:30pm.
